Choosing a cut

As there are a few cuts you can choose from for your steaks.

So a ribeye steak cut is a cut from the rib area of the animal. And a rib steak is a ribeye with a bone in. As this piece of cut has the exact combination of flesh and fat together. And there is a beautiful marbling pattern on the piece. When you grill it, it gives you the grilled steak of your choice.

Although these cuts are close to perfect for grilling, they can be expensive. And the cheaper choices for a steak are the T-bones or porterhouse cuts. As these come from the loin part of the cow. But porterhouses have more tenderloins than T-bones.

Also, always choose a thicker piece of meat for grilling. Something around 1 ½ inches thick is great.

Hence, you must choose accordingly.

The Process:

Things you need:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Melted butter (Optional)
  • Dry Rub (your choice)
  • Compound butter seasoning (Optional)

Now we will discuss the steps you should follow to grill a steak perfectly:

  • First, you will need to pat the steak dry of all the moisture. So take a paper towel and pat the whole steak to soak up the moisture.
  • Then you take a paltry amount of vegetable oil and rub it on the steak, so that your dry rub sticks on to it.
  • After that you will have to season your steak. Take your choice of dry rub and sprinkle generously on the steak. And do not forget to cover the sides with your seasoning.
  • Before you start the grill, make sure that the grates are clean. And grease them with help of vegetable oil.
  • Next, you will need to start the gas grill. To make the perfect steaks, create two heat zones. So that you can use one for searing and the other for cooking the steak throughout. For example, if your gas grill has three burners, turn two of them on one side to high. And one of them on the other side to a lower temperature. Let the grill preheat for around ten minutes.

If your gas grill has a separate searing station, you will not have to worry about this.

  • Then you can put the steak on the grill. Or if you need it more juicy and fatty, gently douse the steak with melted butter.
  • So at first you need to put the steak on the part of the grill where you want to sear it. And this zone creates the perfect sear marks on the meat. Hence, after you place it for the first time on one side, you can move it 45 degrees to the left or right. When you do this, it creates the perfect criss-cross marks on the steak. Keep the steak in this zone for not over 1 ½ minutes.
  • After searing, you can move the steak to the cooler part of the grill. There you can keep it as long as you need. Until you achieve the level of doneness, you need.
  • Although not always the case, the gas grills come with a side burner sometime. So while you cook the steak, you can saute and stir-fry your choice of vegetables beside it.
  • While cooking the steak, always close the lid of your grill to prevent the heat from escaping.
  • When you are satisfied with the doneness of your steak, remove it from the grill. And serve it on a plate. If you want, add compound butter seasoning.

When you have grilled your steak, clean the grill. To know more about cleaning a gas grill, you can check our article on how to clean a gas grill.

FAQs

Q – Is it necessary to use kosher salt while seasoning a steak?

A – Although not necessary, we recommend you to use kosher salt for seasoning the steak or in dry rubs. As the super fine iodized salt doesn’t provide us with a good absorption. Whereas the kosher salt with its crystallized granules allows for a much better absorption to the outer layer of steak.

Q – Which is the best cut for a steak?

A – So we recommend that you go for a rib or ribeye cut for a steak. As both cuts have the perfect combination of flesh and fat. Also, they are beautifully marbled. So you get a great steak with these cuts.

Q – What should be the thickness of the meat of your steak?

A – Always go for the slightly thicker cuts of meat. And a proper steak, according to us, must have around 1 ¼ or 1 ½ inches of meat in it. Only then can it give you a juicy and flavorful result.

Q – How hot should the grill be for a steak?

A – You should turn on the burners of the grill to reach a temperature of around 450-500°F. As it is the optimal temperature for grilling a steak.

But always remember that if you don’t have a separate searing station, you need to create two different heat zones. So there should be one with the high temperature for searing. And the other zone with a lower temperature for slow cooking.

Q – Can I flip my steak on the grill?

A – Of course you can flip the steak on the grill. In fact, you can do it as much as you want. Until you are sure that your steak is cooked perfectly.

But when you are searing, for perfect sear marks, do not flip it a lot of time. Only twice would be sufficient.
